Useful Excel Text Functions – Intellisoft Training in Singapore

There are many useful functions in Microsoft Excel, which are used in everyday work. Whether you work in Sales, Marketing, Finance, Service, Manufacturing or any other department, you can make use of these common functions, and improve your productivity. They can save you a lot of time and speed up your work.

And these functions are available in each version of Excel – whether you use Excel 2016, Excel 2013 or Excel for Mac.

Useful Excel Text Functions – Intellisoft Training in Singapore

Left() – This function helps you to pick up a fixed number of characters from the left of any string. Useful to extract text from serial numbers, first names, fixed number of characters

Right() – The Right() function works similar to the Left function. The only difference is that it will help you to pick a fixed number of characters from the right of any string. Useful for grabbing the product code, a particular number of characters after a hyphen, or an id column.

Find() – The Find function is used to find the occurrence of any particular string or text among other longer alphanumeric strings. Useful to check if a particular string exists in another string, and find out the starting location of the string too. It has helped me in searching for products where the word can be contained anywhere in the product description.

Concatenate() – This function is a boon to combine multiple strings, and make a fully formatted complete string. It has saved me countless hours in combining first names and last name of employees in thousands of files in the past 28 years. Extremely useful.

 Trim() – Useful function to remove extra blank spaces from the beginning, middle or end of any string. This function is a boon for typing mistakes where an extra hidden space can wreck havoc on your sorting.

Text() – This useful function is a gem. It  formats a number and converts it to text. Useful when numbers are needed to be available as Text format.

There is a plethora of useful Excel Functions, which save us a lot of time. Knowing them, and knowing when to use which function can make a big difference in your productivity.

Similarly, there are Useful LookUp Functions, Financial functions, Database Functions, Date & Time Functions.

A mastery of even a handful of functions from each category is required for the data warriors and people on the run, who don’t have the luxury of time to write complex functions and formula. Simply use these function to things done, quick and dirty.
